I lived in Japan for many a year and I'm slightly skeptical that the system might just be for show; much like the defense attorney on the report suggested that trials were, too. The Japanese understand their own culture, what the ordinary folk feel comfortable with and anxious about. I can imagine that a great deal of people will feel incredibly intimidated being in the courtroom firstly, and secondly to be surrounded by 3 senior, very respected, very senior judges at the end of the table. Perhaps another model of the system might be more effective. I do agree to an extent that the kids aren't taught in school to be critical of their government and current systems in the way that Aussie kids are, but I do also think that the sense of deep and grave responsibility an ordinary person will feel about daring to give their own humble opinion to effect the life of another's, would also deter many people to not offer their true doubts in such a setting. That being said, I think that any change to the current system is at least a step in the right direction, and it will take a great deal of time - as many things do in Japan - for all to become accustomed. And that's ok. I also feel optimistic that this system can work in time, because at least on a group basis, Japan's modern society is starting to become much more vocal about things that disturb them. And when I think to my good friends in Japan, of which I am lucky to have many, I know that my friends would be proud and relish the chance to speak their minds, no matter the present company.
