The change that needs to happen is a shift to renewable energy. This country adresses that by implementing a trading scheme that may work. Other countries like Germany address the issue by making it possible for the average citizen to invest in and profit from renewable energy. The result? Germany has a significant percent of it's power coming from renewables in a few years and leads the world in aspects of renewable energy technology. For Australia? Well, it might get through the house and could be implemented in the next couple of years and then would take several more years to have a visible effect. So we can be seen to be doing something when we're not.

So,now big business will get paid big money to pollute big time. More of the same! Traders will now trade the environment into a catastrophic collapse. The stock market and banks could not be trusted with our money, now, we want to give them the little that is producing good in our environment. No thank you.......

Carbon Trading is naively assumed to be a mechanism that will lower human CO2 emissions. The reality is that is a mechanism that will allow traders and businesses to profit at the expense of all of us who are the consumers of goods that create CO2 emissions. The real issue that Dateline needs to look at is the science behind the IPCC's claims about CO2. There are more climate scientists who believe that anthropogenic Carbon emissions have little or nothing to do with any climate changes that are occuring. It's the SUN!!! The critical 9th chapter from the IPCC's 4th report which is the one that supposedly justifies AGW as the cause of climate change has only 7 or so authors who hold te view firmly that human CO2 is the driver of climate. The majority of the others are neutral in their view of CO2 being the driver. Yet the whole of the IPCC's AR is predicated on AGW being a given. The Copenhagen consensus clearly shows that we can spend human wealth far more productively for the good of all manking rather than on some kind of Cap and Trade scheme or ETS that Rudd and Wong are proposing. Let the Science speak.

It can work. As they say in the program, it's about getting the cap right, and not handing out permits for free. The whole point is to make carbon emitting products and services cost more (i.e. for consumers) to reduce demand for these products and encourage alternatives.

Big polluters pay to pollute, then they just put up their prices to cover the cost. In other words, the consumer pays more, and the carbon levels remain at the same level. Absolute madness...

It is true that we are mislead to believe it is carbon being emitted from cooling towers when it is in fact water vaprour. Water vapor however constitutes Earth's most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for about 95% of Earth's greenhouse effect.

NO. We need the infrastructure for low carbon electricity generation in place first. Carbon trading is going to quadruple the cost of electricity.
