Dateline is proud to announce that video journalist Sophie McNeill has won this year’s Walkley Award for Young Australian Journalist of the Year.

McNeill won both the prize for best television story - for her piece Palestine - Divided It Falls - as well as the overall award for print, TV, radio and online journalists under 26 years of age.

Aged 23, she began her career as a cadet at SBS in 2004 and moved on to become a video journalist for Dateline in 2005. She currently resides in Beirut.

An initiative of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, the awards received 150 entries which were shortlisted to 15. These were judged by the Walkley Board.

“I wholeheartedly agree with the award organisers that the future of journalism is in safe hands with entries the calibre of those submitted by Sophie and the other award winners,” SBS Director of News and Current Affairs, Paul Cutler said.

“Sophie is a deserved winner and the award is recognition of her talent, tenacity and commitment to quality journalism.”

McNeill reached the Walkley Award finals in 2007 for her camerawork.
