Australia could make a nice profit by resuming sustainable hunts of abundant whales around it's coast lines. The Japanese are going to hunt them otherwise, so why don't we hunt them instead and be the ones making money out of it? Iceland has latched on to this already, and is selling their excess meat to Japan. I reckon it's BS that whaling is bad for tourism. Most Australians would probably never go on a trip to Iceland in the first place, and even when it comes to the Europeans, most of them aren't so psycopathic about whales that they'd cancel a trip just because some people there hunt whales. See the story too, tourists from Denmark enjoyed the meat. If it's sustainable then there's no problem at all.

Oh please... no way should people be allowed to whale for commercial or any other purpose. I don’t care if it is tradition, it is throwing our eco-system out of balance and it is totally unnecessary for the survival of the human race. Get real. All people care about is the profit being made from the torture. IEYASU TOKUGAWA FROM SAPPORO JAPAN minke whales are not endangered yet but if the world adopts and isolated, uninformed point of view like yours the minke will soon be another one on the endangered species list.

Oww little Australia has its knickers in a knot over the poor whales. What a loud bark from such a little dog! What will you do if you annoy Japan and American isn't there to save you this time, hmm? If you remember Singapore in 1942 you guys didn't fare so well. So maybe you should ease up about the whales incase you get yourselves hurt. If you're wanting something to look after, I understand you have Aboriginies who could do with a little help.

Iceland should definitely NOT be allowed to hunt whales for commercial purposes - no country should be allowed to hunt any whales - this is 2008 and there is no need to catch whales for any reason whatsoever - no one has given a valid reason to hunt whales. Thankyou. L.Ray

All rise in righteous indignation. Compare farming to hunting and be understanding of 'Traditional Culture'! As the only Earthling with the power over all others, why does human have need to hunt and kill whale? To hunt another being is unnecessary at this point in the human experience, even if it is required (if only as a catalyst to the debate). Saving face with; . Hypocrisy - "Research Vessel" (high tech sonar and an explosive harpoon installed).., . Heritage - Byron Bay was FOUNDED on harvesting Humpback Whale, now it's a tourist Mecca for Whale-Watching.., History - Meeting deep at sea some time ago, Americans and Japanese Whalers exchanged Whaling techniques so enhancing each others efficiency... . One culture appears to have grown in regards to attitude. With an active conscious towards killing Whales the majority now abstain. . In a comparison, I have seen Australians in Western Australia feeding and enjoying the company of dolphins. In Japan I saw Japanese trapping and beating dolphins to death with clubs. BOTH for economic reasons...

Whaling is simply... disgusting. For all those arrogant souls, what part of 'thou shalt not kill' do you not understand? The biggest mammal on earth, the might cetacean, the whales, do not deserve to die most horrific deaths - exploding harpoons that still do not kill quickly or cleanly, leaving the whales to writhe in agony for a long time. Human arrogance. Its simply barbaric to kill. Evolve to a plant based diet - the might Hunza people eat very little meat, and are sustained in freezing tempratures. But also, since when did the whales become 'property' of a few countries? They are the whole worlds to look after. Iceland, your continued killing of whales is unwarranted, archaic and cruel. Leave the gentle giants of the sea, in peace. It'd be nice to have some to appreciate for future generations; not just pictures in books, because your country, Denmark, Japan and Norway decided it was their God given right to dedimate them, for a fleeting 'taste'. Grow up.

There is a Moratorium against Whaling. Iceland is slaughtering Whales against this ruling, along with Norway, Japan, and Denmark. There is no need for Iceland to kill whales for food or for economic reasons. The Whale Watching Industry is proving far more profitable, a cleaner, easier, and much more acceptable industry in the opinion of most of the World and will increase their Tourism unless they continue to kill whales. Iceland will find that they will be heavily boycotted (as they should) There is no abundance of Whales, as some Pro-whaling advocates claim. Many species of whales are in danger of extinction and many species on the Threatened List. To continue hunting these gentle trusting creatures, slaughtering them in the most horrific manner is the height of barbariansm. Iceland, come out of the Dark Ages! The slaugter of Whales is not acceptable in the 21st Century. Not anywhere on this Planet.

The question is pointless in the current economic reality. There is NO WAY for Iceland to make whale hunting commercially viable, even its supporters grudingly admit this. I'm actually paying for those whaling boats with my taxes, and that is ridiculous. It's just Icelanders being stubborn and feeling small again.

So called traditional hunting could otherwise be called traditional chip on the shoulder. Hairy chest beating that some see as a symbol of national pride, only shows them for what they are. Just like naughty children who want to draw attention to themselves.Pity it's the defenceless whales that suffer for their inadequacys.
