Statement by the Australian Uranium Association

Wednesday, 20 February, 2008
The Australian Uranium Association has issued a statement in response to the Dateline story by Nick Lazeredes on the sale of Australia's uranium to Russia.

The Association's Executive Director Michael Angwin made the following comments shortly before the story went to air:

1. Australia has bilateral safeguards treaties with all countries to which it exports uranium

2. Those treaties have been very effective

3. Before they are finalised, the treaties are subject to open and transparent examination by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Treaties

4. The Committee publishes it reports

5. The Russia treaty will be subject to that process

6. Anybody who has any concerns about the exports of Australia’s uranium to Russia should put those concerns before the Committee to allow them to be tested and evaluated

7. The AUA encourages that

8. Through the World Nuclear Association, and with the support and active involvement of the Australian Uranium Association, the world’s nuclear industry is taking action to ensure a high level of uranium stewardship by identifying best practice; and helping to make best practice, standard practice everywhere in the world, including in Russia

9. The Russian nuclear industry is taking part in that initiative
