WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Do you think the new Cape York welfare reforms should be rolled out to other Indigenous communities?

I think with a bit of common sense all cimmunities could be self sufficient. Grow own veg,and fruit have milking cows, have beef cattle, have poultry. Build own and fix up own houses, make own concrete blocks, have own concrete batching plant. The list is endless and everyone would have a job.

It should be independantly assessed by discussions with all involved and recommendations made for any changes and roll out

ifind all the comments very intresting however somewhat confusing.as a non aboriginal person,i admit to being "uneducated" on this topic.i find it hard to see any straight forward answer, however i do think a well respected person like noel pearson is certainly worth listening too.surely his knowledge and that of other highly respected aboriginal people is a better alternative than what you have recieved in the past.

No, Noel got this wrong and it should repealed. $48m over 4 years, who's pocket does this go into? Wouldn't $48m be better served by establishing enterprises and relieve the economic despair that Pearson so loudly claims. David Glasgow has a long history when he was a Magistrate of throwing black fellas into jail and now receives big dollars to sit under a palm tree in Cairns and give rhetorical responses about the FRC. Now, that's waste of taxpayers dollars.

Contrary to the Pearson position, that 'Aboriginal have had welfare money longer that they have had gainful employment', this generalisation is harmful and deceptive. Aboriginal communities have had and in some communities still exercise order and work under Aboriginal law. For the years that Aboriginal people had been thrown rations, clothes, alcohol, smokes and the like and where wages were squandered by government and their delegated officers, Aboriginal workers missed out on saving up for the house and the kids. Then gave their life and lost their kids, often to serve in war to protect Australia. Then post-1967 the changes were not fast and Aboriginal men and women had more than one job to hold the family together. Then comes the grand statement that Aboriginal people are all on 'sit down money'. Get the facts straight. Aboriginal families have worked and continue in great numbers to love and care for family. Garma was an outstanding success. How can we say we have culture and heritage when we allow it to be churned up and sold out. The Law is broken. Middle class bureaucrats who dominate the media spotlight do not always get their facts straight. Let's start with throwing the Rep Body proposal out and stop mimicking the implementation of another government department committee that is run by the Talking Heads. Five Star livers. Let's all Australians look and reflect on the weaknesses and start cleaning up the bigotry, the alcohol and drug use...Aboriginal Law is alive and well.

In relation to referrals to the FRC,there needs to be clarification on the use of the term notification with regard to child protection issues. Notification means a report of child protection concerns not an investigation or finding of harm. This should concern people.

Yes, if nothing changes, it remains the same. Positive benefits have emerged, as long as the negatives are addressed asap, then progress will have been made.

Maybe run the trial then have it evaluated both by the Government and the communities themselves.
