FIRST STOP MOUNT ISA

Monday, 8 September, 2008
First stop was Mount Isa, one of the country’s biggest mining towns. I was there to do a story on the influx of people from the Northern Territory and the strain it’s having on services there. Touching down in Mount Isa, I had visions of sweating it out with my little camera but stepping out of the airport I was instead welcomed by a huge gust of wind.

The wind was wherever I went in Mount Isa which wasn’t good news for the small camera I use. Soon into the story though the locals let me in on a little secret - my trip had coincided with Mount Isa’s rodeo - the biggest in the country - and it’s a well known fact in the town that the rodeo is always ushered in with the wind. Every chance I had between filming I made the trip to Mount Isa’s famous lookout hoping that I happened to catch it at a rare moment when the wind had died down and I could get the town shots I needed - but alas it wasn’t to be.
