Soaring petrol prices, escalating food cost and fading knowledge of tradition hunting is leaving Indigenous people in remote communities malnourished.

While many living in main centres are noticing rising costs at the check-out, spare a thought for those living in Australia's remote indigenous communities, where food costs about double city prices.

At Groote Eylandt, locals have found chartering planes to take them to Darwin to buy food is more cost effective.

Julie Brimblecombe from Menzies School of Health Research says "people are spending a higher proportion of their income on food and drinks compared to people in non-remote Australia".

She says a diet that meets government nutrition recommendations is unaffordable for most families living in remote areas.

Video journalist Emma Cook travelled to the remote East Arnhemland community of Gapuwiyak to see how one community is dealing with escalating costs.
