OUR KRIS WINS INDIGENOUS MEDIA AWARD
Friday, 31 October, 2008Just wanted to let you know that it was with great honour and surprise that I picked up the Encouragement Award at the inaugural John Newfong Indigenous Media Awards!
At a great function in Brisbane on Wednesday they announced the award winners and felt very happy for my work to be honoured in that way. Congratulations also to Grant Saunders and Daniel Browning who picked up the other two awards...well done!
As John Newfong has passed away it was extra special to receive the award and be able to meet some of his family members at the ceremony.
John Newfong was a print journalist during the late 60's and 70's with such publications as The Australian, the SMH and The Bulletin.
John didn't really receive the accolades he deserved and probably a lot of people may not have heard of him, yet if it wasn't for Aboriginal people like him busting down the doors of the media industry all those years ago then people like myself may have done it tougher to follow my dream.
My story was titled Volatile Visions and was about the rise in petrol and paint sniffing in the Qld community of Cherbourg, particularly amongst the youth and what some of the elders in the community were trying to do to combat it.
It was a difficult story to film and was an eye opener for myself. I felt sad that there were some young lives doing this terrible practise but at the same time left heartened that there were so many strong people who wanted to make that change.
A big thank-you must go to the wonderful team at Living Black and special thanks to our researcher Alice Mulheron who was a huge help with the story and a supportive ear after a tough day/night of filming. Also to our talented editor, Roberto Arocha, who was simply brilliant in putting the story together...thanks mate!
