I find it incredulous that the rate of Trachoma is on the increase in the Aboriginal population. IF poor nation Nigeria can wipe it out, then Australia is not really trying hard enough or should look at copying Nigeria\\\'s way .This needs to be done urgently!
Personally i think its NOT Christian or Church's business. if you bring religion into this problem, it will be just like what happened in the "stolen generation'. and it will make the problem lot worse... indigenous people will probably feel that they are pushed into the Christianity. we Are to help the poor and heal the sick, yes, of course! however, i believe if we keep focusing on the individual problems, the over all living standard will eventually improve. Definitely need more hospitals and education services, in order to achieve this goal, it is vital that we produce more doctors, educator especially to service indigenous individual or community.
I believe that Churches and Christians need to take up the batten and run with support financially and also physically in takling this disease. The Word of God teaches us that this is part of who we are and what we are to do if we are true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. To feed the poor, heal the sick, and cleanse the lepars. We are to help the poor, the opressed, and the widows. Yes, it is also the Government to be held just as accountable for this nations inhabitants whether white, or black.
Improve overall living conditions.
Our Aboriginals and Torres Straight Islanders live on average 20 years for males and 19 years for females less than the life expectency of non-indigenous Australians, some of the worst statistics for indigenous people in the world, while other countries are improving the health of their indigenous people, or at least finding a plateau in the health outcomes of these people, the outcomes for ingigenous Australians are declining, shame on the Australian Government - we need to improve the lives of our people in a wholistic manner, NOW!
It is impossible to differentiate between trachoma and overall living standards. Trachoma is a direct result of poor living standards and we are all obliged to find a way either through Federal funding and/or through private and corporate donations. As a nation, we cannot allow this. to continue.
Once sight is gone, many more problems arise. Target trachoma immediately.
This is an absolute disgrace! We should be ashamed as a nation that this is going on in today's society with all the technology and advancements in medicine. Poor old Fred Hollows would be shedding tears to see that this is still around.
The sense of seeing. How important is it to a human being? The answer include trachoma in an overall Indigenous living standards policy. As I understand Fred Hollows made a staggering impact in curing the disease in Australia and other countries, using less than standard medical equipment and limited resources. Why is it still in Australia in 2008? Politically, the issue is not important to those in power, because if it was trachoma would have been eradicated before this 21st century began
Both issues are very important and both should be addressed immediately.
