Activists 'deported over Tibet protest'

Thursday, 7 August, 2008

Two Britons and two Americans who staged a dramatic pro-Tibet protest near the Olympic venues in Beijing have been deported from China, their campaign group said.

The four, who unfurled giant "Free Tibet" banners on Wednesday near the "Bird's Nest" Olympic stadium where the Games will open on Friday, were expected to arrive home shortly, Students for a Free Tibet said in a statement.

It said Chinese police arrested the four after the stunt and deported them to San Francisco and London.

It was the first major protest around the Olympic Village in the run-up to the 2008 Games.
