Aussie arrested in Vietnam for heroin

Monday, 14 July, 2008

An Australian woman has been arrested at a southern Vietnam airport after customs officials found her hiding more than 73 grams of heroin in her underwear, state media said.

Nguyen Thanh Huyen, 22, who is of Vietnamese origin, was taken into custody while in transit at Ho Chi Minh-City's Tan Son Nhat airport on a flight from Hanoi to Australia, said online VnExpress.

According to the online newspaper, she had hidden two small packages of "white powder", later identified as heroin, in her underwear.

Airport customs officials could not be reached for comment.

Several Australians of Vietnamese origin have been arrested, mostly in Ho Chi Minh City, for alleged drugs trafficking.

In communist Vietnam, anyone found in possession or who has trafficked more than 600 grams of heroin faces the death penalty.
