Budget has little joy for small business: NIA

Wednesday, 14 May, 2008
Accountants says small business gained little from the Rudd government's first budget.

There was not a lot of encouragement or assistance for the nation's largest employer sector - small to medium enterprises, the National Institute of Accountants said.

"There seems to be no major positives for small business," chief executive officer Roger Cotton said.

The association only cautiously welcomed the tax review announced in the budget.

"It appears the terms of reference are very broad in trying to deal with the demographic, social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century," Mr Cotton said.

"It is difficult to see how this will be balanced with the fundamental need to reduce the complexity of the Australian tax system.

"In any event, the benefits are unlikely to flow through until after the next election."

Accountants welcomed the budget's new infrastructure funds and hoped education funds would help address skills shortages in accounting, Mr Cotton said
