NINE DIGGERS WOUNDED IN AFGHANISTAN

Wednesday, 3 September, 2008
Nine Australian special forces soldiers have been wounded, one with life-threatening injuries, in an ambush by Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Is Australia's defence budget justified? Is Australia's defence budget justified?

According to a widely agreed upon benchmark, the following is true. A country who spends more on defence than on education, is, or is heading towards becomming 'A BANANA REPUBLIC. Watch next years Government expenditure for both, SENOR'S AND SENORITA'S.

This cash injection into our defence force has been needed for quite some time this is a no brainer. It does not take a PM to know this or ASIO/ASIS to tell Rudd this. The issue is not just a big spending spree as China / India will spend in a financial year what will take us 10yrs as outlined by Rudd. We need to build our defence structure inside out in conjuction with the ADF. I am not going on about national service what i am talking about is attitude change from the ground up. To give you an insight into this attitude change we need was demonstrated by the Victorian Police service going off at me for firing a Slug Gun in the backyard. This will give you the idea of how much trouble we are really in, if the cops are more interested in wasting 1hr of their time in a slug gun incident beacuse that cant solve a real crime what is our ADF going to do in a real shooting war? This is what will endager us not the Indians or anyone else that is threating us or our weak defence budget.

Justified? We have needed more for decades. We have one of the largest shorelines in the world, and no naval force to speak of, our new "fleet" of four subs is to be made offshore because of a skill shortage and the navy drydocked a fourth sub on the 11th of september because of a lack of crew. The f/a-18 hornet was designed in the seventies and is our top of the line superplane. The Joint strike fighter sounds great in 2012, what about tomorow. I belive that compulsory national service is the real answer to the staffing issues. And those "diplomatic" nations aren't sitting on some of the worlds largest uranium/coal/narural gas deposits.

  • A PROUD ROMAN FROM SYDNEY SAYS: 05:18:24 PM Tuesday, 9th September, 2008

Look at the population of China and the huge growth the economy experiences each year. Has anyone thought of how much water such growth requires. Why do you think China invaded Tibet and Xinjiang. Well, to secure water of course. In fact all water which feeds the river systems in China come from Tibet. This is why the PLA recently drew up invasion plans for Vietnam. These plans are accessable on the net after they were sneeked out of the Central Government's office in Beijing. Look at China's real agricultural land. What, the Chinese have 25% of the world population, and only 7% of China's land can be farmed. Well, without Xinjiang, this figure would only be 2%. In America the figure is close to 40%. Does anyone really believe, when China's carrying capacity collapses due to over population and an ecological meltdown, that the Chinese government will not try to take land and water from a boarder territory, such as Vietnam. Lets get real, the Australian Defence force is essential. As a Proud Australian, and a Proud Roman (In fact all us Western Folk are Roman, arn't we), I believe in hoping for the best, but planning for the worse. So YES, what Australia needs to do is increase our defence budget, to match any future problem from the north.

Israel has the correct idea on DEFENCE. If it comes to the crunch, ultimately the only deterrent you can count on is your own. Australia should do likewise. A nuclear deterrent gives the MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCKS.

I believe that the Armed forces should and could earn much of the funds for their budgets just like the Universities do.
