One dead in severe US storms
Friday, 9 May, 2008Severe storms have swept across the southeastern United States, damaging homes and businesses in at least four states.
One person was killed and three were injured by a tornado in North Carolina, authorities said.
An apparent tornado wrecked a shopping area in Mississippi and strong winds flipped a mobile home in Alabama. In south-central Tennessee, at least four homes and a few barns were damaged.
A tornado touched down late on Thursday on the outskirts of Greensboro, North Carolina, blowing three tractor-trailers off a highway, authorities said.
One person was killed and two were injured in the accidents, and a third was hurt when a wall collapsed.
There were no confirmed reports of tornadoes in Alabama, but winds gusting up to 97kph flipped a mobile home, officials said. A house and a building in the rural county were also damaged.
