Troubled British soul singer Amy Winehouse has been taken to a London hospital's accident and emergency unit, her spokesman said on Monday evening.

Chris Goodman said he was told around an hour earlier that paramedics had been called to her house in north London, and that she had been taken to University College Hospital, but added that he did not know what was wrong with her.

"We were called at approximately 8:40 pm (1940 GMT) to an address (in north London) ... to reports of an adult female taken unwell," a London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

"We sent an abulance and a fast response car and the patient has been taken to hospital."

The Grammy-award-winning "Back To Black" star, a recovering drug addict, was diagnosed with lung condition emphysema last month, and her father said earlier this month he feared she could die "a very slow and painful death" if she did not remain on the straight and narrow.
