Zimbabweans seek refuge at US embassy
Friday, 4 July, 2008Around 200 Zimbabweans were seeking refuge at the US embassy in Harare after being forced out of the political opposition's headquarters, a senior US official said.
"There were about 200 men, women and children that were removed, forced out of the MDC (Movement Democratic Change) headquarters," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

"We are seeing what we can do for these individuals. We're contacting NGOs (Non-government organizations) and other third parties to see what support can be provided," McCormack said.
"We don't see a security risk at the moment, the individuals are outside the embassy security perimeter, but again we're seeing what we can do for them," he said.
McCormack said he did not know who drove the people out of the MDC building, adding he was seeking more details about the incident.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai rejected calls Wednesday to form a national unity government, saying it would not solve the country's crisis after Mugabe's widely condemned one-man election on June 27.
He said such an arrangement would merely accommodate Mugabe after much ofthe world had labeled his regime illegitimate.
Tsvangirai defeated Mugabe in the first round of the presidential election on March 29, but official vote totals showed him just short of an outright majority.
The opposition leader subsequently pulled out of Friday's run-off, saying nearly 90 of his supporters had been killed and thousands injured in violence he blamed on pro-Mugabe militia.
