Austrians pose nude for art and football

Monday, 12 May, 2008
More than 1800 Austrians have turned out to pose nude for a Spencer Tunick photo shoot at the stadium that will host the Euro 2008 final.
Over 1,800 men and women have posed nude for US photographer Spencer Tunick in Vienna's Ernst Happel stadium, less than a month before it hosts the European football championships.

Today's photo-shoot, which lasted several hours in warm weather, drew precisely 1,840 participants.

Organisers had hoped for a symbolic turn out of "at least 2,008" ahead of the Euro 2008 tournament.

The subjects of the artwork posed in the stands and on the pitch, before the newly-refitted stadium was to be presented to the European football governing body UEFA tomorrow.

The event was organised by Vienna's Kunsthalle museum as part of a cultural program running alongside Euro 2008.

The participants were not paid, but instead received signed pictures of the photo-shoot.

The photographs are to be displayed at the Kunsthalle, starting June 23.

New York-born Tunick is famous for large-scale nude projects, having created several installations from Mexico City to the Netherlands, Barcelona and Newcastle.
