Kibbutz wins Victoria Derby

Saturday, 3 November, 2007

Trainer David Hayes picked up his second Group One Victoria Derby 13 years after his first when Kibbutz scored an impressive win in the Classic at Flemington.

Jockey Craig Williams, who celebrated his first Derby win, had Kibbutz travelling midfield throughout the 2500 metre race and the gelding let down brilliantly over the last 200 metres to storm to a comfortable victory over the fast-finishing Littorio with Marching third.

Hayes, whose first Victoria Derby winner was Blevic in 1994, heaped praise on the performance from the three-year-old Golan gelding who showed maturity beyond his years.

"It's a huge thrill and I didn't want to swap horses from the half-mile (800m), he was travelling beautifully," he said.

"They were all overracing a little bit and he's going to win a lot of races with that attitude, he just travelled like on a thread of cotton for Craig today."
