NZ arrest sparks alleged chainsaw attack
Sunday, 11 May, 2008A man in New Zealand being arrested for breaching bail allegedly attacked two police officers with a chainsaw, forcing them to hit him with their car to escape.
Sergeant Ed Baker said the officers went to an address at Mosgiel, south of Dunedin, to carry out a routine bail check on Saturday.
The man had allegedly breached his bail and, as the officers tried to arrest him, attacked them with a chainsaw.
"They ran from the address, got into their patrol car and he continued to attack the car with the chainsaw," Mr Baker told NZPA.
"In self-preservation, the guys have hit the offender with the patrol car and it's knocked him off his feet and he's run away."
Mr Baker praised the officers involved in the incident, saying they were shaken but "acted very professionally".
The armed offenders squad was deployed but failed to find the man on Saturday night.
However, about 4pm Sunday police were called to a Brighton, Dunedin, address and as they were setting up a cordon, the man appeared.
He was arrested and is due to appear in Dunedin District Court.
