Human rights


The issue of China's human rights record came into focus in the lead-up to the Games when anti-Beijing demonstrations in Tibet descended into riots earlier this year. Pro-Tibet demonstrations occurred all over the world and dogged the Olympic torch relay in Europe and the Americas. Many groups are still calling for a boycott of the Beijing Games, or even just the opening ceremony, because of China's human rights record, particularly the suppression of Tibetans.
