A painting by artist Mark Rothko has became the most expensive contemporary work to sell at auction.

The artwork fetched $87.4 million dollars at auction Sotheby's in New York.

The canvas by the Latvian-born painter entitled "Yellow, Pink, Lavender on Rose," had been valued at around 40 million dollars.

It went to a buyer who asked to remain anonymous, according to the auction house.

It had been part of the collection of the New York philanthropist David Rockefeller since 1960.

Also at Tuesday evening's sale, a painting by the British artist Francis Bacon fetched 63.3 million dollars, eclipsing the expected 30 million dollar price tag.

The most expensive contemporary painting ever sold was Jackson Pollock's "No. 5" which took 168.2 million dollars in a private sale to an anonymous buyer in 2006.
