Rudd makes education priority
Monday, 26 November, 2007Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd has ordered his Labor MPs to each visit two schools before Thursday's caucus meeting in Canberra making education a priority for the new government.
Mr Rudd and deputy Julia Gillard today visited Southern Cross College, at Scarborough on Brisbane's northern bayside, to discuss his "education revolution".
Mr Rudd told reporters education was his top priority and he had instructed all members of his caucus to visit a government and non-government school in their electorates in the next two days.
He said he expected MPs to discuss with the schools details of the government's plan to provide computers for every high school student in years 9-12 and the introduction of school-based workplace training centres.
"I expect, therefore, that when our parliamentary party meets in Canberra on Thursday that we will also nominate on the agenda for that meeting a discussion and debate on the implementation of these programs," Mr Rudd said.
"And I will expect members of the party to report back on what they've found in their communities."
He said he had instructed the secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Peter Shergold, to prepare the Labor Party's education policies as the first submission to the new cabinet.
"It is important that we get to work on this straight away," Mr Rudd said.
"Next year there will be a very extensive tendering process on behalf of the various school systems in Australia and therefore it is critical we get that planning work started straight away.
"That will be agenda item number one."
Mr Rudd said parliamentary experience would be the key to selecting to his new cabinet, which he would handpick rather than leave to factions.
Rudd to call state leaders' meeting
Mr Rudd also says health will be a key agenda item for a meeting with state and territory leaders.
Mr Rudd told reporters in Brisbane the meeting would be held in the next three months.
"I've already indicated to the premiers we will plan to meet in the first three months and when appropriate preparatory work has been undertaken," Mr Rudd said.
"This is an important priority for us.
