Meanwhile anticipation is building for the men's final as Briton Andy Murray faces up against Roger Federer.

Murray fought his way through the tournament, triumphing in four sets over Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the semi finals

Battle for the top spot

This is the ninth time that a grand slam final has featured two women battling for world No.1 honours.

Serbia's Anna Ivanovic was upset in the second round at Flushing Meadows, setting the stage for her tumble to third in the rankings behind the US Open winner and runner-up.

US fourth seed Williams has spent 57 prior weeks atop the rankings since first claiming the top spot in July of 2002.

Serbian second seed Jankovic spent one week atop the rankings last month, becoming the 18th woman to claim the honour.
