Stroud shoots 64 to seize PGA lead

Saturday, 11 October, 2008

American Chris Stroud, seeking his first PGA victory, fired a six-under par 64 on Friday to seize a two-stroke lead after the second round of the $US4.5 million ($A6.58 million) US PGA Texas Open.

Australian Matthew Jones also shot a six-under 64 and holds a share of fifth with nine others on 133, including South African Rory Sabbatini.

Stroud birdied seven holes, all of them odd numbered, against a lone bogey to stand on 10-under 130 after 54 holes with compatriots Paul Goydos, Tim Herron and Tim Petrovic on 132.

Stroud birdied the first three odd-numbered holes on the front and back nines, sandwiching the first two on the front nine around his lone bogey and also making a birdie at the par-4 ninth.

Stroud stands 205th on the PGA money list with just under 130,000 dollars and needs a strong showing to try and secure playing rights for next year without having to play in the qualifying event as he did last year.

The career-best PGA effort for Stroud came last year when he shared fifth at New Orleans. He also finished in a share of sixth at last year's Texas Open.

This season, Stroud has missed the cut in 17 of 24 starts with his only top-40 finish a 12th-place effort in Mexico.
