Sunni vice president to rejoin Iraq govt
Sunday, 27 April, 2008Iraq's Sunni vice president says his political bloc is intent on rejoining the country's Shi'ite-led government after an absence of nine months.
Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi says this would allow the reestablishment of a government of national unity.
In a statement issued on Saturday, al-Hashemi said the new Cabinet lineup would help save Iraq.
Last week, Sunni lawmakers announced their block would return to the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. They dropped out in August, saying they were being sidelined by the dominant Shi'ite parties.
Their return would be a boost to al-Maliki, who is struggling to reconcile Iraq's feuding Shi'ite and Sunni politicians.
